John’s range of experience, gained over 25 years in engineering within Australia and internationally, holds him in good stead to lead ARCH Artifex. During his career, he has witnessed the inner workings of projects from all sides and through all stages. He holds an excellent track record of success and a strong working knowledge of the commercial side of project delivery. It is this multifaceted career history that inspired John to shape ARCH Artifex's culture, and it's what enables him to think intuitively, adapt quickly, and act decisively for the benefit of our clients.
John has an impressive portfolio of projects, including North West Rail Link, South West Rail Link, Sydney Light Rail, Northern Sydney Freight Corridor, Cross City Tunnel, Makkah Metro, MTRC, Doha Metro, Delhi Metro, Channel Tunnel and Heathrow Express.
Joining John at the helm of ARCH Artifex is Rob Smerdon. Rob is an analytical thinker with more than 20 years’ experience. His versatility and leadership skills are appreciated by the team and our clients alike.
He is an influential contributor to our success and remains a valuable resource for clients such as Transport for NSW who rely upon his project and interface management experience, technical knowledge and commercial acumen.
Notable projects Rob has been involved in most recently include the Sydney Light Rail, where he fulfilled the role of Design Manager, and also the Northern Beaches BLine program, where he worked as Project Manager Utilities and Council Interface following his time as Early Works Manager.
DIRECTOR - Engineering and Project Management
Steve has over 20 years’ experience in developing and delivering rail, road and power infrastructure projects. He brings a broad technical capability to complex multidisciplinary projects, with particular expertise in developing delivery strategies, constructibility staging, and interface management.
His portfolio includes significant consulting commissions on major projects, such as the Northern Beaches B-Line Program, Transport Access Program, Inner West Light Rail Extension, North Strathfield Rail Underpass, Peakhurst to Kogarah 132kV Twin Feeder project, as well as the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link, New MetroRail Project (Package F), and the NSW Clearways Program.
DIRECTOR - Safety and Systems Assurance
Francis joined ARCH Artifex as Director Safety and Systems Assurance following on from strategic appointments with United Group Limited, Lloyd’s Register International, Planytec and Alstom. He has over 20 years’ experience across various industries, including Transportation, Defence and Aeronautics.
During this time, he has developed a particular focus on rail and has successfully led the provision of Safety Assurance, Systems Engineering, and RAMS. He has also completed numerous audits on major rolling stock and infrastructure projects throughout Australia, Europe and South East Asia.
Francis has a wealth of experience working with rolling stock, in particular, having provided project management and technical validation of RAMS, ILS, warranty support and safety studies for CAF, ALSTOM Transport, TMB, TALGO, KN (Shanghai), Metro Lisbon, SENER, GISA, Thales RSS, NAVANTIA, Air Liquide.
PRINCIPAL - Safety and Systems Assurance
Ashok is widely regarded as one of the leading specialists in the NSW rail industry. He has over 25 years’ industry experience - 12 of which were spent within Transport for NSW.
During his time at TfNSW, Ashok held key positions in Safety and Systems Assurance and helped deliver some of the state’s largest and most complex programs and projects. He was instrumental in the setup and rollout of TfNSW’s Authorised Engineering Organisations (AEO) process. He now puts his insider knowledge to best use, guiding clients who need their own AEO accreditation.
Principal Engineering Manager
Jonathan is an experienced Engineering Manager with 20 years’ experience. He has held Senior Engineering Management positions with Transport for NSW (TfNSW) on various major rail infrastructure projects. He has an expertise and passion for all aspects of systems engineering and has been instrumental in the development and deployment of assurance within TfNSW.
Senior Project Manager
David has more than 12 years’ experience in the construction industry, with seven of these being within the brownfield rail environment. With experience working on the client, contractor and consultant side, David has developed a high level of engineering and project management skill as well as excellent communication skills through his daily engagement with internal and external stakeholders. David has a solid understanding of ASA standards, Requirements Management and Systems Assurance, CCB gateways, and Sydney Trains network procedures and rules.
In recent years David’s focus has been on the design, construction, testing and commissioning of stations in challenging brownfield rail and major inner-city centre environments, including both underground and above ground stations such as Museum Station, Town Hall Station and Concord West Station.
Senior Project Manager
Mark is an exceptionally skilled and experienced project manager with broad experience on the full lifecycle of projects from design to construction, testing and commissioning. During his 30-year career, Mark has made significant contributions to key rail projects in Australia and New Zealand. His most recent project management and engineering management roles have revolved around the NSW government’s transport plans, including working on the Parramatta Light Rail, Sydney Light Rail and the NSW rail network’s Power Supply Upgrade.
Senior Engineering and Interface Manager
Busara is a committed and enthusiastic member of the ARCH Artifex team, bringing with her over 15 years’ experience in the development, planning and delivery of large infrastructure projects. Six of those years were spent working within Transport for NSW on the Sydney Metro and Transport Access Program.
Prior to working in the transport sector, Busara worked on a range of small to medium sized developments and refurbishments across the Health, Residential and Education sectors.
Project Controls Manager
Over the past 25 years, Paul has undertaken a wide variety of project control roles on significant civil engineering projects in Australia and overseas. Of particular note is Paul’s role in engineering and project controls on both the Inner West Light Rail Extension and the City and SouthEast Light Rail Project. In addition to bringing his broad expertise to the table, Paul is a team player whose interpersonal skills have proven crucial to successfully engaging with and gaining approval from internal and external stakeholders.
Safety and Systems Assurance Manager
Tuan is an experienced practitioner in the design, integration, testing, verification, and validation of solutions to complex projects. Over his 16-year career, he has developed and led the application of systems engineering and safety assurance through the complete project lifecycle. He is fluent in the application of SE Standard ISO-15288 and RAMS EN 50126.
His most recent achievements include leading the delivery of the Systems and Safety Assurance activities for the Sydney Light Rail project. Tuan has also been made responsible for leading the Safety and Systems Assurance workstream for the Preliminary Design of the Sydney Metro Stations and the Mechanical and Electrical works for Waterloo, Pitt Street, Martin Place, Barangaroo, Victoria Cross and Crow’s Nest underground stations.
Peter has over 10 years’ experience in the rail industry and has a diversified skill set, with a focus on requirements management, design management, interface management and project management on major Sydney rail projects, including the Sydney Light Rail and North West Metro.
Aaron is a versatile technician who brings his drive and enthusiasm to a range of activities, including assisting in risk management activities, website development, corporate IT systems and his core strength in BIM and civil drafting.
Aaron’s technical expertise stems from experience working on various platforms, including BIM, civil drafting, Civil 3D/ AutoCAD, 12d, Navisworks and Revit, in both the road and rail sectors. Aaron has been instrumental in the rollout of BIM models within projects and organisations as well as leveraging the advantages of integrated 3-D models into design, risk and project decision-making processes.
Business Group Leader ICT
Lachlan is an electrical engineer, certified project manager and management professional with over 20 years of experience in the development, management and delivery of major infrastructure projects in the IT systems, telco and high voltage power distribution industries. He has a robust technical background and is a strong communicator, with extensive experience managing large multidisciplinary teams across a broad range of clients and cultures.
Senior Project Manager
Brad is an effective Senior Project Manager with 15 successful years’ experience in the delivery of construction projects in rail, roads, civils, bridges, streetscape, utilities, stormwater and tunnelling works. Brad has delivered various rail projects on behalf of both Sydney Trains and Transport for NSW, so he is aware of the processes, requirements and governance required when delivering these types of complex projects.
Senior Safety & Systems Assurance Engineer
Aman is a versatile and skilled Senior Safety & Systems Assurance Engineer with 17 years of experience in Safety Assurance, Systems Engineering, Requirements Management, Interface Management and Risk Management. He has worked on a number of major rail projects in NSW and Victoria including Sydney Metro, Sydney Light Rail, Melbourne Metro, NIF Eveleigh Depot and the PSU program.
Safety and Systems Assurance Engineer
Han has 8 years’ experience in the rolling stock industry with Bombardier Transportation Australia and Hyundai Rotem Company. During this time, he has developed a particular focus on RAM and Safety Assurance for rolling stock projects throughout Australia.
Christina has a varied background, in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, International Business, and Media, Culture and Communications. She has a deep understanding of cultural differences, strong analytical and interpretation skills due to her having lived in more than five countries.
